Marin Summer Theater Forms New Non-Profit

mar00572After operating under the umbrella of San Marin High School Music Boosters for three years, Marin Summer Theater is pleased to announce that it has formed a non-profit organization and elected a board of directors.  Marin Summer Theater is now a wholly independent California corporation dedicated to continuing its very popular student summer theater program.

DSC04522 “The San Marin High School Music Boosters have been fantastic to work with and very supportive of MST, “said MST Artistic Director Patrick Nims.  “My thanks go to all of the Booster board members and staff of the past three years.  Even though MST is now separate we will continue to partner with Boosters on performance concessions.  San Marin High School and the Novato Unified School District have also been critical to the success of MST and deserve public recognition for their support of the arts. “

“This is a very important step for Marin Summer Theater. We loved being part of San Marin Music Boosters and could not have started MST without their underwriting and support.  But MST has been so successful that we created more administrative work than the Boosters expected.  We came to the mutual decision last winter that MST should become a separate entity after the 2011 season.”ChicagoIMG_6728

DSC01“The new non-profit is the only thing that has changed,” continued Nims.  “The program will remain the same.  We will continue to present three dynamic, high quality productions during our six week summer season with a company of college, high school and middle school performers and technicians.  Because we continue to receive support from the San Marin Music Boosters, San Marin High School and NUSD, we can continue to serve our company members at the lowest possible cost.  Our tuition fee will remain almost half of what is charged by similar programs.”

DSC06750Keeping things the same makes sense because in three short years MST has established itself as “the” destination in Marin for serious theater students looking for a challenge.  Starting with MST’s first season in 2009 of The Beaux Stratagem, Bernstein on Broadway and Sweeney Todd MST has astonished audiences with the outstanding quality of its productions.  Every season of MST has finished in the black and the 2011 season of Songs For A New World, Once In A Life Time, and West Side Story set MST box office records.

“MST is a great opportunity for young actors to do great theater and learn from top notch directors and educators,” said MST Board Member Kelly Poulos.  Poulos is also President of the Frankie Poulos Foundation and a long time MST supporter.  “Bravo to Pat Nims and Emily Gates for making Marin Summer Theater a reality.”DSC08768

Board Member Kele Gasparini said “I see a very promising future for MST. I really like the idea of College age students who are very interested in theater and maybe even studying it in school, coming back and mentoring younger students with the same passion. I feel it brings the quality up and it is a win-win for all those involved.”  Board Member Pamela Nichter added “I am thrilled to be joining the MST board and have great confidence in my fellow board members and Pat Nims to continue the wonderful work already in motion by offering talented and motivated young people a great theatrical opportunity. “

“It is hard to believe that we are about to begin season number four of Marin Summer Theater!” said Board President and Musical Director Emily Gates.  “It is such a delight to see so many talented, focused young people come together and in just six weeks put together three new and amazing shows.  It has also been interesting to see the lasting bonds created among the participants.  Working with creative passionate young people is really a joy.  We have been blessed to have dedicated adults who also enjoy the journey.”

Marina Nims will complete the MST board as Secretary and Treasurer.80-flagmaker-dsc07600_w600_h900

3-3dsc09069_w600_h406Wasting no time in raising the bar, MST has previously announced that it will present the North Bay premiere of Legally Blonde, The Musical.  “Legally Blonde is based on the popular movie starring Reese Witherspoon, and we are thrilled to be the first theater company in Marin to produce it,” said Nims.

As for the other two productions MST will present in 2012, Nims is mum.  “We are working on several very exciting shows and hope to have an announcement soon.  We are doing our best to put together the most exciting MST season yet.”
